spiritual receptivity

I have been re-reading A.W. Tozer's, The Pursuit of God...something I try to do once a year. This book really has had a profound impact on my walk with the Lord and is used to root up a lot in my life that is worth examining. One of the themes that I am wresting with is the idea of "spiritual receptivity" and a deep longing to cultivate this in my own life.

"Let any man turn to God in earnest, let him seek to develop his powers of spiritual receptivity by trust and obedience and humility, and the results will exceed anything he may have hoped in his leaner and weaker days" (64).

It is beautiful that this is something that we are unable to do on our own, but only through trust, obedience, and humility. We need God to work in our hearts first for this process to be possible.

Tozer also address a theme of Presence and Manifestation as not being the same thing....

"The presence and the manifestation of the Presence are not the same. There can be the one without the other. God is here when we are wholly unaware of it. He is manifest only when and as we are aware of it. On our part, there must be a surrenderto the Spirit of God, for His work is to show us the Father and the Son. If we cooperate with HIm in loving obedience God will manifest Himself to us, and that manifestation will be the difference between a normal christian life and a life radiant with the light of His face" (58).

I want my life to be a life marked by the manifestation of His that cultivates a life of spiritual receptivity, and obedient surrender/trust to his plan.
